July 2011 Newborn Screening (NBS) Lab Multi-State Backup Planning Workshop

In collaboration with the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), the Southeast Regional NBS & Genetics Collaborative (SERC) hosted a special Emergency Preparedness Workshop for NBS Laboratories on July 20th, 2011.   Led by William Perry - SERC’s Emergency Preparedness Consultant and Patrick Hopkins of the Missouri State NBS Laboratory, the session was attended by representatives from every state in the Southeast Region.  The Workshop included presentations on emergency preparedness planning at the state laboratory level, with real-life examples of past events and the use of the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) system as a mechanism of organizing an emergency response.  In addition, Workshop attendees participated in a hazards assessment with discussions of the  “Most Likely” and the “Most Significant” events that would threaten individual state laboratory operations, the logistics of providing backup services to other state laboratories in an emergency, and strategies for a regional emergency preparedness framework.   Overall, the participants viewed the workshop as an important first step in emergency preparedness planning and vowed to continue working with SERC to see to it that a regional emergency preparedness plan becomes a reality.
